How do you convert grams to cups?

Answer by  Gunrunner (561)

It is best to use an internet gram to cups calculator list as you are converting from a weight to a volume. Many of these use a generic 229. 92 grams per cup as a base number. Look must up specific items to get specific conversions.

You cannot directly convert grams to cups as a cup is a volume measurement while grams are units of weight (actually mass). Also, because the density of materials vary greatly, the conversion factor for say flour is different than that of sugar. There are tables available that give approximate conversion factors for many food ingredients.

When converting grams to cups you are going from weight to volume. It seems that normal 229. 92 grams per cup is used when trying to determine a close estimate. This factor will be different for each ingredient, so I suggest finding the correct conversion rate on the internet/cookbook.

The conversion isn't precise because cups measure volume while grams measure mass. However, you can assume that there are about 85 grams in a cup.
