Neoprene is a type of rubber that when it is worn as a wetsuit, it traps water between the wetsuit and the skin. The water that is next to the body gets heated by body heat. Then the body is surrounded by warm water so the body does not get cold.

The suit traps a layer of water next to your skin, so your body warms the water. Neoprene contains nitrogen bubbles which insulate the water layer, keeping it warm.

Neoprene rubber is an insulator. That means that it keeps the heat emanating from your body from dissipating into the colder water. Instead, your heat is held inside the suit.

It basically traps water between the wetsuit and your skin so the water can be kept warm and in turn keep your body warm.

Closed-cell foamed polychloroprene/(DuPont)Neoprene, usually sandwiched in-between nylon fabric layers, contains N2/Nitrogen gas bubbles/pockets which are good thermal insulators. A tight-fitting wetsuit traps a layer of water next to your body which your body heat warms; the combination of nitrogen gas bubbles & polychloroprene/(DuPont)Neoprene slows the transfer of heat to the colder water outside the wetsuit.

It works by essentially trapping a small volume of water in the suit. This small volume of water is kept hot by your body and acts as a buffer or insulation to the vast quantity of cold water surrounding you.

Neoprene is plastic that has a large quantity of air bubbles in it. These act as a insulating layer by trapping heat.

The wetsuit allows water to get inside of it - between you and the suit. The water heats up because of your body heat, then acts as an insulator, keeping the cold from the outside water away from you.

Neoprene foam contains nitrogen gas bubbles. Trapped nitrogen gas does not conduct much heatso it allows the water trapped inside the suit to retain the diver's body heat.

The same way a wool sweater keeps you warm in air: by trapping a fluid (air for the sweater, water for the wetsuit) against your body. The trapped water and neoprene acts as an insulator, which keeps the heat from dissipating as it would if the water was allowed to circulate freely around you.

It's a killer when you first get into the water with a wet suit on. The cold water seeps in tortuously slow but soon your body is surrounded by a layer of warm water trapped between your skin and the suit. You don't feel the cold lake water.
