A thermocouple has two electrodes and a voltmeter. The conductivity constant is known for the metal comprising the thermocouple, and using the voltage difference (from a known or calibrated temperature) the temperature at the electrode is calculated. The thermocouple is not powered by gas, rather it is measuring the temperature of gas.
