A downflow furnace works by allowing cold air to enter into the top of the furnace unit and getting it heated with the help of the upflown furnace' fan that blows the air to the heat exchanger. The warm air then, is blown throughout the house via the air vents.

Air flows down into the system. This air is cool and since hot air rises naturally, it becomes heated and then rises back up as more cool air rushes in from the top. This means only the warmest air will enter the home through the heating vents. The cold air pushes the heated air outward.
