Here is a practical example. Algebra can be used to determine what dimensions to use to make a box with a given volume and use the least material possible.

A carpenter uses algebra in order to calculate the area of a space in order to buy supplies, calculate estimates for jobs, measure and cut supplies need to correctly to a job. A carpenter will also use algebra to build and estimate space needed for installation of appliances and objects.
