The ball-and-socket joints are unique since one bone has a round head and the other bone has a deep, concave cavity. Inside the joint, there is a space between the bones that allows movement. The round head fits with the deep cavity, making the various movements as the bone "roll over" each other with the capsular space and the ligaments.

A ball and socket joint works when one bone serves as a ball, such as your arm, and another bone serves as a socket, such as your shoulder. Ball and socket joints permit the most degrees of movement.
