There are ball and socket: hips, elbows, knees. There are the saddle joints: tops of hands and feet. The sliding: the thumb. Hinge: fingers, toes, and knees. These move like a hinge in a door. There are also the immovable joints like the skull and the coccyx (tailbone area). There are also slightly movable joints like the spine.

There are three main joints types: fibrous (immoveable), cartilagenous (partially moveable) and the synovial (freely moveable). There are six moveable joint types: hinge joint (e.g. elbow); ball and socket (hip); gliding joint (feet, hands); saddle joint (thumb); pivot joint (head/neck); hinge (elbow, knee). The spinal column is a series of cartilagenous joints.

Joints in the body are classified based on how they move. Synarthoses don't move, amphiarthroses move slightly, hinge joints are in fingers, pivot joints are in the neck, a condyloid joint is in the wrist, a saddle joint is on the thumb, and a gliding joint occurs between vertebrae.
