When you borrow something, it is good to write down your name, the date, the item you are borrowing (if money, the amount) and the date agreed upon for return between borrower and lender, along with the lender's expectations should the item not be returned withing the alloted time.

A promissory note should be prepared by an attorney, but you can write your own promissory note as long as it's specific. Include the date of the transaction and amount of loan. Write legibly. Document the name of lender and borrower and how the money is to be paid back. Get your document signed in front of a notary.
