You buy a grid (comes in all kinds of shapes and sizes) and what it has are little pegs that fits into the hole of the beads. So what you are essentially doing is arranging the beads and making them "stand up" in the way you want. Put the paper that comes with it on top and iron on low.

To use perler beads you create a design on a peg board. peg board is a small board with little spikes. They come in many different shapes and sizes. You place the perler beads onto the spikes in the design you want. You then iron both sides of the design to fuse together.
