Although cats are smart, you cannot teach them to do everything. Among other things, they can be taught to stay off counters and go in the litter box.

Cats can be trained to do some things like not jump on counter tops and not to sit where they are not supposed to sit, but they generally cannot be trained to play fetch or do tasks like a dog. Cats learn through you repetitively showing them what they should not do.
