Crate train your dog. You can read about it online. When you take him out every few hours, set him in a litter box intead of taking him out in the yard. He'll learn to use the box. Keep the box clean and somewhat private.

While cats might be a help, you don't want them to share the same litterbox. Just like with house training you want to take them to the litterbox after eating, drinking, heavy play, or sleeping. If you have a kennel put a second one in there so they will go in it rather then on blankets.
