To throw a good hook with power, start the punch with your arm and then incorporate the shoulder, then the upper body and the legs. It sounds like a lot, but it should be done a one fluid motion, similar to the motion of throwing a baseball or a football.

With a closed fist, you throw your arm in a "hook" like fashion, in which you bend your elbow slightly and bring it on an angle across your body onto your opponent.
