What can be done when a child throws a fit?

My sister's son often throws fits and I would like to have ideas of how to advise her.

First, remain calm. Look right into their eyes and speak to them calmly and quietly. If the child doesn't settle down, remove them from the situation or try timeout.

This is hard to do, but stand your ground, do not give in. If they are wanting something in the store or whatever else might be the situation, just say no, and stick to it. I know it can be embarrasing, but once or twice ought to fix this problem.

When a child has a temper tantram the best thing to do is ignore him and leave the room. If he does not have an audience, it will soon stop.

When my daughter went through this stage, I found the best thing to do was to get up and leave the room without saying anything. It passed quickly.
