Females do not have antlers, they are smaller than males and tend to travel in groups. Males will only have antlers in certain seasons but they almost always travel alone.

Aside from differing genitalia, male deer (except the Chinese Water deer) have antlers, while female deer have only stubs. However, males lose their antlers annually and female reindeer have antlers. Additional telltale signs are size and behavior: males are larger and more muscular than females. Females can frequently be seen with their young or an udder may be visible.
