The Compressor is what helps regulate your refrigerator's temperature and give power to the thermostat.When it stops working your refrigerator will not keep the proper temperature and food will spoil.

Well if the fridge still cools as it should the it is working. You should be able to feel the coolant moving through the lines.

This is simple; if you're there when it happens you will hear it! The usual hum will go BOOM! And then you're hear something like a scream.

It will not keep the refrigerator cool. And it will be in the room temperature and all the inputs of the refrigerator will rot.
