Start by putting together a business plan with a detailed budget, which will make your consider things you might not otherwise think of. Remember that it takes deep pockets to get a business off the ground. Permits, licenses, insurance, advertising and marketing--all can cost quite a bit.

If you are looking to start in this business, you will need a CDL license and you can get an option to lease a truck or buy a used truck. Then you will have to bid with other truckers to get their loads. You can also work for a larger company but be an independent contractor.

First, you need a truck. If you work as an owner operator for an existing trucking firm, you can run cargo and keep any profits. Alternatively, you can be hired by load for other businesses.
