How do you stack cake tiers?

I would imagine very carefully. But seriously, from what little I know about baking cakes, it's usually one layer or tier at a time. There is probably a tool or some kind of aid available to make this task easier. I have seen that parchment or wax paper between tiers works just as well.

Place each tier on a cake board that fits the diameter of the cake. Cut four to five pieces of dowel rod the height of the bottom tier. Insert into bottom tier and place second tier on top. Repeat with dowel rods in second tier; place third tier on top.

For a wedding cake type arrangement, make supports from wood dowel or plastic drinking straws cut to height. Insert five dowels in the first layer, top with the second layer on a cardboard round. Put five dowels in the second layer,top with the third layer on a cardboard round, etc.

To keep the tiers from falling to the side, you place wooden large tooth picks to hold then in place, make sure that the tiers lay flat and hold them together with frosting or fruit filling.
