Remember that the value on each side of the equals sign is always equal. Whatever you do to one side of the problem do the other too.

In algebra, you're looking for the missing number, usually denoted by the letter x. Isolate x by normal operations, making sure to do it on both sides of the equation.

Depending on what the problem is, there is almost always a formula or step by step method that will solve any problem. Taking an algebra course is recommended.
