How do I solve algebra problems when "x" cancels out?

+7

One of two things happen when you have an equation where all "x-terms" cancel out... First, if you have a false statement like 5 = 13, then there is no solution to that equation. In the second situation, you will have a true statement like -7 = -7. This means that any real number is a solution to the equation.

When x cancels out, that means that x could be any number at all and the equation would still work. You should look and see if you missed an equation telling you what x might be, and/or go back and check your work to see if you made a mistake.
