How do you say I am sad in Japanese?

I need to tell my grandmother I am sad in Japanese?

You can say "watashi wa kanashii desu" or just "kanashii desu". "Kanashii" just means "sad". If you want to say that something has made you sad, that would be "kanashiku natta" / "kanashiku narimashita" ([I] have become sad), or "[X] ga watashi ni kanashinaseta" / "[X] ga watashi ni kanashinasemashita" (X has made me sad).

As usually in Japanese one can distinguish a casual form and a polite one. A casual variant of "I am sad" is "kanashii yo", while a more polite one is "watashi wa kanashii desu". In fact there is a pretty known Japanese film "Kanashii kibun de joke" directed by Masaharu Segawa.
