The key to a successful and beautiful Japanese garden is in the size of the gravel because of the lovely designs that can be made by raking it. Depending on the size and type of garden rake you plan on using, 8mm to 10mm gravel is recommended because it is easy to manage.

Pea sized gravel is best for raking and designing the garden. You can also use limestone chips or granite chips which are similar in size.

You will want a gravel that is made with small grains which will make it easier to rake and white, black or gray look best.

Size is not as much of an issue as is the type of stone used. For a traditional Japanese rock garden, use river rock. Whether pebble-sized or golf ball sized, the two most important considerations are 1) that the stones be smooth, and 2) that the stones be clean.

When choosing the gravel you want to choose something that easily makes designs when raking. Many people report that using 8-10 mm limestone chips works the best for forming design. Other people prefer a slightly larger 10-15 mm gravel.
