Mildew is mainly caused by damp so it is important to air your home regularly by opening windows. Wiping the offending area with a mild bleach solution will also help.

This type of job has to be done by a professional. They know how to find the source and kill it. The mildew would have to be killed before the odor goes away.

First you must remove the mildew. Thoroughly dry any area that is wet which would cause the mildew. I would recommend a disinfecting spray such as lysol after you clean.

Open up all the windows on a warm day, wash the floors, wipe down the walls, and vacuum all the furniture. You may consider using a bleach solution to wash.

The source must be corrected by using a dilute mixture of bleach and water which will actually kill the mold bacteria. Just wash the effected surface area using this mixture and then rinse with a warm water solution. Be careful because this bleach solution can remove color from certain fabrics and rugs.
