GAIN or Gator Advertising Information Network can be removed typically with tools such as AdAware, amongst others as well. To do so manually, one would need to delete certain registry keys from the registry itself then would need to delete the GAIN directory. If you cannot delete this directory because it states it's in use, just simply restart your computer.

There are several tools out there that will do it for you. One is Spybot Search and Destroy. This will scan your system for known Adware / Malware type programs. If it finds it, it will attempt to remove it from memory. It also has updates so it stays current with the programs.

Remove the software that was packaged with the GAIN adware by using Add/Remove Programs located in the control panel. Afterwards, use a adware scanner to make sure all traces of the adware are gone from the system.
