How do you prune crepe myrtle bushes?

Start with the suckers at the base of the tree and work your way up, pruning anything that crosses, is dead, or grows at an awkward angle.

Imagine a scalene triangle, and follow that shape....allow the bottom 3 branches to be the thickest, and longest. The next 3 branches should be shorter, and thinner. The top 3 branches should be the thinnest and only 2 or 3 pairs of leaves long!
