You need to dig out the rotten wood and using wood putty, fill in the gaps. Use a tool that is easy to handle, like an ice pick. Then fill in the gap with the wood putty. After it is dry, use sandpaper to smooth it into shape and paint it over.

You can use a scuplting tool or the claws on hammer depending on damage. Gently pull away rotting wood. Fill in with putty. Sand for orginial shape and sealant afterwards

I would usually just go to home depot and buy some new columns and build them, If there rotting thats a safety risk for the structure so i would go with safety first and tare them out and replace them with new columns because its the safest thing to do.

You will need to remove the rotted wood column in order to start the repair. If the repair is made with the wood then you can just add a new wood in the slot and stain as needed. If is a more major problem then removing the entire columns should be done.

You could do that by making sure you get the right part of the wood because you dont want to damage the wood even though it is already rotten. All you could call some out that could help you and it actually may stay good not rot as quick that way.
