You want to make sure that your surface is clean and scuff with a very fine sand paper then use a stain colored paint!

Most old furniture either has coats of oil-based paint on them, or they are made from hardwood that has been oiled. Therefor, use 2-component 'industrial' paint, and follow the instructions.
