You make whiskey by fermenting grains in water and letting the yeast convert the sugars into alcohol. This product is then aged in barrels for a long time to achieve flavor and smoothness.

To make whiskey you distill some grain or other organic material in a still to produce raw alcohol which is then stored in wooden barrels to age. In the United States it is not legal for you to distill you own alcohol without paying taxes and without prior approval to operate a "distilled spirits plant".
