It's basically just a rotation of triangles to make the argyle pattern. You use different colors of triangles and rotate them.

An argyle pattern is somewhere between checkers and plaid. Use a square pattern turned diagonally to make an even sized diamond pattern as a start point. Then you should go back and use solid lines to fill in/ break up the pattern, just follow the diamond outlines. Use lots of pastel or bright colors!

Argyle patterns require you to be able to do multicolor knitting, which basically consists of knitting with two different colors of yarn at the same time. This is usually referred to as "stranded", "Norwegian", or "Fair Isle" knitting. If you do a Google search for "argyle knitting pattern," you usually can find free patterns.
