Well, in my opinion to make a tale believable is by mentioning the incidence in short. Being an extra-ordinary helped you to show that this incidence would really happen. Don't go in detail just highlights the surprised moment's.
For a tale to believable it must be at least plausible -- that is, it would be possible this event could really happen, even though extraordinary. Don't go too far.
