To lie successfully, the person telling a lie should be relaxed. He should not show signs that can make it obvious for others that he is just lying.

First thing is you have to make sure your story is believable. And then you need to make sure that you don't trip yourself up. But sometimes it is hard to do than to just tell the truth.
