It depends on what you want a dog for: hunting, companionship, field trials, etc. If you're looking for a companion dog, go to a local kennel and "meet" some breeds.

First you have to decide what it is the dog will be doing with you. Is it going be used for hunting, a working dog for cattle or the blind, or just an indoor dog for companionship and family. Then you can go and research the breeds you decide you like.
