Before your child goes to kindergarten he or she should know some basic skills. Such skills include color recognition as well as letter and number recognition. They should also have some personal and social skills.

Most often kindergarten teachers are looking for social skills more than what you might think as education. Children are ready for kindergarten if they will follow instructions, play well in a group, and have at least a 20 minute attention span - even if they don't know any colors.

Your child should be familiar with the alphabet and counting- even if it's just singing and saying the correct responses. He or she should be able to speak clearly, use the restroom, sit long enough for a craft or lesson, and be able to hold a pencil, crayon, or marker.

Your child should be able to sit up to 15 minutes. They should be able to count up to 20 and recognize numbers 1 to 10. They need to be able to name all the primary colors along with knowing the alphabet.
