With true labor, the contractions will be more regular and start getting closer and closer together with time. They will also be of a greater intensity. You may also notice your water break or bleed a little.
If it's real labor contractions will get stronger and closer together. Time them for an hour or so to see if there is any pattern on them getting closer.
