Well T-mobile currently has an offer going on "pay as you go" in which you can get a free sim card.

In the past there have been one of two ways I have gotten a free sim card. The first is if you are a new user. T-Mobile will give you a free card if you sign up for service. Technically you have to pay for any SIM card after this but it depends on who helps you.
