If you are going to install a pre hung door frame assembly. You typically want to rough in your framing (studs) to be an inch wider than your pre hung assembly. This will allow for an half inch of clearance for shims on each side of the door frame for leveling and squaring.

Measure the door including the jamb and then make the opening 3/4 of a inch bigger all the way around it to allow for plumbing the door.

Your first step is to decide where the door is going to be when you are putting in the studs, plates and shoes for a new wall.Do the same when you are cutting a door for an existing stud wall.To make nailing your door frame easier use metal lumber connector brackets.
