Yes, you can buy a door frame with or without the door. A frame that comes WITH the door is called a "prehung door". A frame WITHOUT the door is also available, and is called "door jam material". This comes in 3 pieces: the header and 2 legs. Either option can be purchased at your local Home Depot or Lowes.

I don't see any reason why you can't or why it would matter. You just have to shop around to find what you want.

Most door frames come with the door. If you need just the frame your best and cheapest bet is to just build one.
