First the repair depends upon the type of the roof you use.If your roof is a wooden shake roof then you need to use a shake or a shingles to replace the damaged ones.Use hammer and a chisel to split the damamged shake.Then measure the gap between the damaged part and insert a shingle and rectify the damage

Well if you are afraid of height then pay a roofer to fix it for you. The will proably need to pull off some shingles and tar the center of the valley.
