Usually at local government offices or a national records centre you can trace an old census to find people if you need to find where they were born. The National Registry of Births and Deaths should have the actual certificates.

You can access the general register office in England, you can alos check various nets on line , they have a free net called free BMD and this is a volunteer project.It is aimed at providing free access to birth, marriage and death certificates for England and Wales. Acensus bureau in that country also has that information.
