Are DVD recorders set to the region where you buy them?

I want to buy one for my grandparents in England.

Yes and no, you have the option to purchase a region free or region discriminating dvd recorder. Your best bet is to purchase a region free or multi region dvd recorder for your grandparents, and they shouldn't have any issues.

Yes, if you want the DVD recorder to work in England, you should buy it from an English company. US DVD recorders will not work with UK DVDs.

DVD recorders are usually set to the region where you originally bought it at. The regions are usually set by continents. You may find a specific region-set recorder from ebay.

Most of them are, however, I have in fact run into the problem of DVD recorders that are not. My best senario would be to avoid purchacing a DVD recorder.
