How do you drop criminal charges?

Can you just call the police?

While you can contact the police - you'd need to do so in person to verify your identity - and request that charges be dropped, keep in mind that they are under no obligation to do so, particularly if a warrant has already been issued for the arrest of the suspect.

An individual cannot just drop a criminal charge against another person, it is the state's job and it is up to a judge whether the case has merit. If the state cannot meet its burden of proof of all of the elements of a crime, then the case is dismissed.

Call the police and ask. Depending on the situation, you may or may not be able to drop charges. There are several factors to be considered.

You can't. Dropping charges is up to the district attorney, and they do not have to do so even if the victim wants them dropped.

It depends on the stage of the case. Early on, you can notify the investigating officer. If charges are filed, contact the prosecutor in the jurisdiction where the incident occurred.

It depends on the state. In some states, you can call the police, but you'll probably still have to go in to the police station to file an official statement. In some states, for some crimes, there are mandatory arrests and jail time.

Despite what the movies tell you, it isn't the victim's choice about whether charges are filed or dropped. The prosecutor makes that decision. If you don't want to pursue the charge, that's a consideration but no the only one. Contact the prosecutor and tell them your position.
