Depending on the weight you are going to be applying to the hook. I would suggest that you install it in a stud otherwise you will risk it tearing out of the wall. You may also use a hollow wall anchor to prevent tear out.
It solely depends on the weight on which you are going to be applying the hook.But use precaution when trying to apply the hook so that you don't damage your wall.
