I sketch in both head and shoulders, usually on colored paper. After drawing marks to assist placement of eyes, nose and mouth, I observe the subject and sketch in features. The serious drawing always begins with the eyes. Try not to stress while drawing the nose, and start with highlights.

First, the artist must establish the general shape of the person with a light drawing outlining the general shape. Then the artist can add details of facial features, other body parts, and details of clothing and their textures.

The best artists are the ones who hardly ever look at their paper. For me, I start by sketching an egg shape for the head and by constantly keep looking at the face while I sketch. From there, I work my way down by doing some rough and light sketches.
