When dividing or "cloning" plants it really makes things much easier with the use of a rooting agent. These can be found at most hardware stores with a plant section or at a hydroponics store. Cut below a node, apply rooting agent, then plant and water plenty.

When you take it out of the pot you need to unwind the roots by hand so that you don't break any of them they have a very delicate root base and if broken before replanting the plants do not do well at all. The other thing is when you take them out of the pot pour them out.

To divide an English ivy, gently separate the roots so that you have a section the approximate size you want. Replant this section. Alternatively, place a clipping of the ivy in water to root. It will do so in a couple of weeks, and you can then plant this section in potting soil.

English Ivy is fairly easy to divide. You pick a larger size then you need that take a sharp knife and cut the rootball into sections making sure you leave a good size ball for each new plant. It would also help to trim the Ivy plant a bit.
