How do you diagnose if an electrical switch does not work?

Check to see if there is voltage on the other side of the switch, either with a volt meter of by plugging something in.

In house wiring, the best way is to use a non-contact voltage detector. Near the switch it should light up. If it does not, the problem is elsewhere. If there is power at the switch, check at the appliance cord. If there is no power, the switch is broken.
