First and foremost is to know whether the deceased had a will or someone was given power of attorney to handle all the deceased affairs.

It is all based on who it is that had died and for what reason, how, and if it were natural. ex. Olde age.

In a good situation the deceased has a will that specifies how they want their propery distributed between family and friends. If not, things will have to go through probate.
