You get a toenail clipper for dogs, you grab one of the toenails, inside you have blood vessel and nerve (can see the blood vessel), cut 2-3 mm from it.

Cut the nail on a 45 degree angle. If the dog's nails are clear, leave space between the quick (vein) and the cut. With black nails, keep cutting a little nail off at a time, if you're unsure where to cut, until you see a white dot on the tip.

Toenail clippers can be purchased at any pet supply store, or with smaller dogs, your nail clippers will work just as well. Look at the nails and identify the vein running through it. Clip off the end of the nail being careful to avoid the vein. If you do nip the vein, styptic powder of flour can stop the bleeding.

When you cut them make sure you only go back to where you see the wear from walking spot on the bottom of the nail and never make it bleed.

There are a few different designs of nail trimmers for dogs carried at most pet stores. Choose a nail trimmer based on the size of the dog.

There are veins into it, if cut, they bleed. Always have products to stop it. Looking directly at the toenail, it's translucent you see a vein, Cut it right after.
