Should you cut the ears of rat terrier dogs?

I was told that my dogs ears need to be trimmed but that just seems to be wrong on all levels.

There is no reason to cut a dog's ears. It's painful, has a number of risks and serves no purpose. Some countries outlaw such practices. Your inclination that it is "wrong" is correct. Leave your dog as nature intended him and love him for all his parts.

Ear clipping or trimming is a purely cosmetic procedure that is unnecessary and painful for the animal. If you are uncomfortable with doing it, don't.

No. Sometimes their ears are erect and sometimes they aren't but a rat terrier's ears should NEVER be cropped. Go with your first instinct and leave the dogs ears intact.

I believe that the practice of cropping dogs' ears and tails is archaic and should not be done. It's purely aesthetic and serves no medical need.

Generally speaking, there isn't a good logical reason to cut ears or tails of any breed of dog. It pretty much started as fashion, not necessity. I had a miniature pinscher many years ago and I had gotten so many comments about how I should have cut his ears or cropped his tail but I refused.
