Hat sizes in Europe are in centimeters, while they're in inches in the US. Simply convert to inches (divide by 2.54) to get a number you're more familiar with.

U.S. hat sizes measure head diameter in inches, European sizes measure head circumference in centimeters. To convert U.S. to German sizes multiply your American size in inches by 7.98 and round it to the closest full number. Example: U.S. size is 6 3/4, then 6.75*7.98=53.87 so German size is 54.

To calculate your metric (European) hat size a measurement of the head circumference should be taken. This is best done with a cloth tape measure or if not available use a piece of string measuring where you would want the hat to sit. One inch equals 2.54 centimeters.
