That varies by year. For those older than 1983 you can't. 84-96 will require a Ford Diagnostic reader. 97, 02-05 models can be checked with an OBDII scanner that can be found at many online retailers or borrowed from some repair shops.

To check your OBD codes you will need a code reader that plugs into a port under your dash. This port is usually next to the steering wheel.

The best way is for free go to Auto Zone or Advance auto parts and ask them to let you know what the codes mean. Sometimes this is free.

Many auto parts store will pull the codes for you and tell you what they mean for free. They just plug a little computer under your dash.

One option is to go out and purchase a compatible code reader and read them yourself. However they can be pricey but can save money in he long run. Another option is to take it to an autoparts store or shop and have it scanned. Places like Autozone should do it for free but shops may charge you.

If you go to your local auto parts store you can pick up a book for your Thunderbird. I can't answer the codes because each year automobile may have different responses. The book will contain the codes and what they mean for your particular year and model.
