If the vehicle is a 96 or newer it will have a OBDII computer. If so take it to a Oriely's and ask them to run a diagnostic test.

Depending on the year you should have a plug under the dash that you can plug in an OBDii scanalyzer. Most auto parts stores offer a free check engine ligt analysis or will loan you the tool. Plug the scanalyzer into the OBDii outlet under the dash and follow the on screen instructions.

Code books can be purchased from dealer. Hook it to diagnostic reader, and the light will blink a number of times and either display code or reset.

A lot of parts stores will scan for codes for free. The code usually relates to a bad component for which the code relates to, but not always. For example a code for a lean oxygen sensor could be a bad or dirty mass air flow sensor. Make sure that all regular maintenance has been done first.

If your check engine light comes on this means you have error code in the computer. To find out what the codes are you will need to take it to a dealer and have the use the code reader to pull the codes off. You can also go and buy a hand held code reader and read them yourself.
